Exhibition dedicated to Comenius opened in Tartu

This year marks 430 years since the birth of Czech scholar Johannes Amos Comenius. The Embassy of the Czech Republic celebrates this anniversary with an exhibition on the life and work of Comenius which opened at the University of Tartu Library.

The exhibition was opened by Ambassador David Král, who emphasized in his speech that the main legacy of Comenius is that he brought to the attention of European sovereigns and elites at the time the importance of universal education which, according to him, represents a key instrument in achieving societal progress and thus creating a better world. At the same time, he rightly earned the nickname „Teacher of Nations“. However, Comenius cannot be considered only as the founder of modern educational science, on whose works we build our educational systems up till today, because the world also remembers his works in theology, linguistics, didactics, pansophism and other disciplines. Among other things, the Ambassador pointed out the interesting connection between Comenius and the University of Tartu. Comenius wrote textbooks and led an educational reform in the Kingdom of Sweden. In 1646 he met Queen Kristina of Sweden, who was also studying from his textbooks. All of this happened shortly after the Academia Gustaviana (former name of the University of Tartu) was founded by Kristina´s father, King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden in 1632.

In addition to the Ambassador, the Rector of the University of Tartu Toomas Asser and the Director of the University of Tartu Library Krista Aru also spoke at the opening of the exhibition. They also highlighted the contribution and role of Comenius in the development of the modern education system and expressed their gladness that such a detailed and comprehensive exhibition has found its way to Tartu. The opening of the exhibition was attended by, among others, lecturers from the Department of Slavic Studies of the University of Tartu and students studying Czech there. The students had the opportunity to talk to both Ambassador David Král and Deputy Head of Mission Petr Preclík. They talked about studies, the work of the embassy and what is happening in the world at large.

In addition to the opening of the exhibition, Ambassador Král also had several meaningful meetings in Tartu –  with the Rector of the University of Tartu Toomas Asser, the Director of the Estonian National Museum Kertu Saks and the Director of the Tartu Art Museum Joanna Hoffmann, with whom future cooperation opportunities were discussed. The embassy is pleased that the first joint activities are expected already this year.
