Language cafés opened in Rakvere for one day

On 26 September, European Day of Languages was celebrated, and on this occasion the European Commission Representation in Estonia organized a Language café event, which has already become an annual tradition. All to raise awareness of Europe's cultural and linguistic diversity and to encourage people to take part in lifelong language learning.

This year's Language café took place on 24 September at the Rakvere Cultural Center and gave language enthusiasts the opportunity to get acquainted with 20 different languages.

As this year's event was part of the program of the national food and culture festival KAMAlammas, the teachers had chosen „food“ as the main theme. So did Michaela and Tiina, who taught Czech and played the role of waitresses, were waiting for visitors to their Czech café.

Before getting acquainted with the menu, the initial expressions of courtesy (hello, please, thank you, goodbye, etc.) were learned, and then you could start ordering.

Of course, there were only Czech national dishes in the selection, but Tiina and Michaela were willing to share explanations and recommendations and show the dishes at the pictures.

But how to pay in a café if you do not have any money? Easy - the customers were able to redeem their food and drinks with the help of tongue twisters – the one who was able to pronounce the tongue twisters received „Czech crowns“ in return. Let it be said that sentences like „Chrt pln skvrn zhltl hrst zrn“ and „Tři tisíce tři sta třicet tři stříbrných stříkaček“ did knot the tongues of the participants, and so the Czech café was filled with good mood and laughter.

As every year, the participants of the short language lessons visited various „cafés“ and collected stickers that proved their participation in lessons. Prizes were drawn among the more diligent students as well.

According to the café theme, none of the participants had to leave on an empty stomach. For their part, the embassies rewarded them with candies, spices, pretzels and other pastries.

Many thanks to all the people involved in the venture and see you at next year's Language café!
