Minister for Human Rights and Equal Opportunities J. Dienstbier

From 30 June to 1 July Czech Minister for Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Jiří Dienstbier visited Estonia. He was one of the keynote speakers at the Council of Europe conference that discussed the impact of Gender Equality strategy 2014-2017.

Minister Dienstbier had a presentation at the conference „Are we there yet? Assessing progress, inspiring action: the Council of Europe Gender Equality Strategy 2014-2017“, that was organised by the Council of Europe together with the Estonian Ministry of Social Affairs. 150 delegates from 40 countries participated. Estonia is currently holding the presidency at the Council of Europe, Czech Republic is preparing for the presidency next year.

In his presentation, Minister Dienstbier touched upon about the developments of human rights and equal opportunities in Czech Republic based on the Beijing Platform for Action that celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. In November 2014, Czech Government approved the Gender Equality Strategy for 2014-2020 that includes eight main areas determined by the Beijing Platform. The action plan 2015-2018 to forestall domestic violance was approved in February 2015. Minister noted that currently Czech Government is discussing gender balanced representation in decision processes. As the main problem, Minister Dienstbier mentioned unsufficient implementation of the strategies.

Minister Dienstbier also held bilateral consultations with the Estonian colleagues, he met with the Minister of Social Protection Mr. Margus Tsahkna and the Minister of Health and Labour Mr. Jevgeni Ossinovski.
