Czech Embassy hosted a symbolical handover between the French and the Czech EU Presidencies

The French Presidency of the EU Council is just coming to an end and the Czech Presidency for the next six months is about to start. On Monday, 27 June, a relevant event took place at the Czech Embassy, where the French Ambassador Éric Lamouroux handed over a symbolic baton to the Czech Ambassador, David Král. The event was a collaboration between the Embassy of the Czech Republic, the Embassy of France and the French Institute of Estonia.

This beautiful summer evening continued at the embassy to get acquainted with French and Czech wine culture. The guests took part in a workshop on Czech and French wines, conducted by two experienced wine experts – French wines were introduced by Karl-Erik Laanet from Veiniateljee and Czech wines by Filip Lutzký, representing the Czech winery Obelisk. It was exciting to hear about the Czech and French wine regions, how the wine is being produced there and to find different nuances from the wines based on the wisdom shared by Karl-Erik and Filip.

As the Czech Republic has fixed its reputation in the public consciousness primarily as a beer making country, we hope that this Monday we were able to prove that the country also produces very good and high-quality wines.

A pleasant evening allowed us to stop thinking for a while about the challenges ahead. Europe, which will hopefully finally emerge from the pandemic and aim to focus on post-COVID recovery, is facing the greatest challenge to the European security order since the Second World War. Ambassador Král also expressed his gladness that Mariana Betsa, the Ukrainian Ambassador to Estonia, took part in our event. As Ambassador Král confirmed, Ukraine will remain among the top challenges of the Czech half-year term in the helm of the EU. He also stressed the need to move forward with other long-term tasks, including the implementation of the Fit for 55 legislative package. After all, the EU's motto "United in Diversity" clearly expresses our core strength: although we are different, we share the values of solidarity, democracy and respect for human rights, heading towards the same goal of accepting our share of responsibility for environmental, social and economic challenges our world is facing.
