Signing of a memorandum with USAID on support for a transformation cooperation project in Georgia

On August 13, 2020, Ambassador Petr Mikyska and USAID Head of Mission in Georgia Peter Wiebler signed a Memorandum of Understanding between USAID and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic on the project "Strengthening Georgia's Democratic Resilience - Fighting Disinformation!"

The aim of the project is to strengthen the resilience of Georgian democracy through the support of local civil society and universities. The wide range of project objectives includes building media literacy among consumers of different ages and minority communities, strengthening journalists' skills in verifying information and, last but not least, building local capacity of civil society organizations to map and detect harmful foreign influence and disinformation. By signing the memorandum, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and USAID undertake to cooperate and support the above-mentioned project, which is jointly implemented by three Czech NGOs People in Need, European Values ​​and Transitions.

The signing ceremony was preceded by speeches by both representatives, in which they mentioned the traditionally good partnership between the two countries in the field of development and transformation cooperation. Presentations of partner organizations and project implementers followed.

Both sides contribute equally, the Czech Republic provides $ 332,000 in support of projects for the above mentioned three organizations under the Transformation Cooperation Program, and the United States is increasing the total budget by the same amount from the Emerging Donors Challenge Fund. The total budget is $ 664,000.
