Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic approved to grant humanitarian aid to Afghan refugees in Iran

In October 2016, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic approved to release  the financial sum of 100 000 USD to support Afghan refugees in Iran through the assistance of the representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Iran.

The contribution will be implemented through the UNHCR regional program focused on the improvement of living conditions of Afghan refugees and securing better outlook for their future engagement in the society and employment. The program also includes various steps to support voluntary return of the refugees to their homeland. The program expects to use the financial aid to cover the most urgent needs using various measures to be implemented in the fields of healthcare, education and securing the basic needs.

The approved humanitarian aid follows up with similar financial contribution to support Afghan refugees in Iran provided by the Czech Republic in 2010, 2011 and 2013.

Over a long period of time, there have been up to 1 million registered and an estimated 1,5-2 million unregistered Afghan refugees living in Iran.
