Visit of facilities for refugees in the province of Khorasan Razavi

Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Iran organized in July 2017 for representatives of diplomatic missions a visit to facilities used by refugees and a refugee camp in the province of Khorasan Razavi in the northeast of Iran, where is located the second largest refugee population within the country (after the province of Tehran ). The field trip was also attended by a representative of the Czech Embassy in Tehran.

The Czech Republic in the long term financially supports activities of UNHCR aimed at improving living conditions of Afghan refugees living in Iran and ensuring better prospects for their future engagement in the society and employment.

The field trip gave the opportunity to see how effective the funds used by UNHCR are spent and their real impact and learn about refugee related projects. Participants were also informed about services provided to refugees by Iranian authorities. They met the Director-General of the Bureau for Aliens and Foreign Immigrants’ Affairs (BAFIA) and the Governor of the province A. Rashidian, they could also personally interact with refugees.

Iran has been long hosting an enormous number of refugees in its territory, mainly from neighbouring Afghanistan (almost 1 million registered and up to estimated 1.5 million unregistered refugees).
