Czech compatriot Hugo Marom passed away

On Sunday January 7, 2018 passed away one of the most important Czech compatriots Hugo Marom at the age of 89 years. The funeral was held on January 8, 2018 at the Kiryat Shaul Cemetary in Tel Aviv under the presence of chargé d´affaires of the Czech Embassy Karel Pažourek, who hold one of the speeches, and the Military and Air Attaché of the Embassy.

Hugo Marom, formerly Hugo Meisl, was born on 9th October 1928 in Brno to a Jewish family. His father was a merchant with shops in the city centre and his mother was a skiing instructor and she also participated in the Olympic games. On 3rd August 1939 he and his brother Rudi left with the last transport of children to Great Britain organized by Sir Nicolas Winton. As a young man, Marom studied in Wales and later enlisted in the RAF air-training school before he and his brother returned to Brno in 1945 to find their parents. Marom later graduated from the Brno University of Technology.With just six months of training under his belt, Marom flew one of the last three Spitfires supplied by the Czechs to Israel. He later became one of the founders of the IAF, commanded the 110th squadron and was the country’s first test pilot. He left the air force in 1964. Marom and his wife settled in the Tel Aviv neighborhood and had two daughters. In 2010 he received the Gratias Agit Award.
