Czech Embassy participated in this year´s Succot celebration of the Haredi consul Rabbi Matityahu on 30 September 2015 in Jerusalem

For several years now, Matityahu Cheshin, affectionately dubbed by a former US ambassador as the Haredi consul, has been hosting Succot celebrations to which invitees include members of the diplomatic community.

This year M. Cheshin moved the event to the succa of the Orthodox Union in the Talbiyeh neighborhood of Jerusalem, where there is also a large area for women. And indeed there was at least one female diplomat present – Dorothy Camille Shea, the deputy principal officer of the United States Consulate General in Jerusalem. Among the other diplomats were deputy chief of mission of the Embassy of the United States in Tel Aviv David J. Schwartz and representatives of the Philippines and the Czech Republic.

Haredim regard themselves as the most religiously authentic group of Jews. M. Cheshin believe that for foreign diplomats serving in Israel it is important to familiarize themsleves with all the multifaceted sides of the country, and as far as ultra-Orthodox Jews are concerned, he is convinced that if diplomats have a personal connection with them, they can help to dispel false concepts about Jewish communities.
