The most important Czech-Israeli writer and translator Ruth Bondy passed away

On November 14, 2017 the most important Czech – Israeli writer and translator Ruth Bondy passed away at the age of 94 years in her flat in Ramat Gan.

Czech - Israeli journalist, writer and translator Ruth Bondy translated over forty Czech books, f.e. by Bohumil Hrabal, Jiri Weil, Milan Kundera, and even Fimfarium by Jan Werich. Her first translated book from Czech into Hebrew was The Good Soldier Švejk. In Israel she was known as a journalist who regularly had on Fridays a column one of the most widely read newspaper Davar. Ruth Bondy received for her work as a journalist several awards and she was the the first female journalist in Israel who was awarded the prestigious Sokolov Prize. In 2003 she was awarded by the Gratias Agit by the Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs. Ruth Bondy was born in 1923 in Prague district Royal Vineyards. During the war she went to concentration camp Theresienstadt and then to family camp in Auschwitz. She survived as she was transported in June 1944 to work in Hamburg, Germany. She was in Bergen-Belzen in the end of the war. After the war she worked in United Press office in Prague. In 1949 she went to Israel as part of Czechoslovak brigade to help to the State of Israel.
