To Make a Comedy is no Fun – Czech Film on the Epos Film Festival

We are inviting you to the screening of Czech Film „To Make a Comedy is no Fun: Jiří Menzel“ at Thursday March 15, 2018 at 17:00 in Tel Aviv Museum of Art – Recanati Hall.

The event is organized together with Czech Centre Tel Aviv as a part of Epos Film Festival. Tickets to order here.

Born in 1938, Jirí Menzel burst into international consciousness when he won the best foreign film Oscar for his first picture, “Closely Watched Trains.” His next film, “Larks on a String,” was banned by the Czechoslovak government, and was released in 1990, after the fall of the Communist regime. A member of the Czech New Wave, Menzel decided to stay in his homeland despite Big Brother’s close watch—and he continued to make films that in an understated way critiqued the government and its people. Using archival footage, the film tells Menzel’s story as well as that of Czech cinema, which forged ahead despite the government’s strict censorship. Milos Forman, Ken Loach, Emir Kusturica, and others describe the influence of this director, who managed to smile, be optimistic, survive, create, and succeed, even when his government tried everything to shut him up.
