Long Term Visa for Study

This article brings information about lodging applications for long term visa for the purpose of studying for a stay of over 90 days (up to 1 year).

Long Term Visas for Study are required for citizens of the so-called third countries staying in the Czech Republic longer than 3 months.

When applying for a student visa, kindly follow these steps:

1. Schedule an appointment: The processing of long term visas for study takes up to 60 days. Make an appointment on time. Instructions on how to make an appointment are on our website.

Before coming to the Embassy please prepare your application with the following rules in mind:

  • Applications are submitted in person only.
  • Fingerprints are collected during the appointment and interview can be held with the applicant.
  • All supporting documents submitted must be originals or verified copies
  • All documents must not be older than 180 days with the exception of a passport, registry documents (birth certificate or marriage certificate), diplomas and similar documents and photo (if reflecting current appearance).
  • Foreign public documents must be legalized, i.e. equipped by an apostille or superlegalized.
  • All documents must be submitted in Czech language (with the exception of bank statement, which might be in English).
  • We kindly request that applicants also prepare a set of copies of all the requirements.
  • Incomplete applications are unacceptable - they will not be accepted for processing and will be returned to the applicant pursuant (§ 169h of Act on Residence of Foreign Nationals)
  • Processing time for long term student visa is 60 days.
     

2.  Visit the Embassy on a given date and lodge the application presenting the following requirements:

  • Application for a Long Term Visa (PDF, 534 KB) - completely filled out before coming to the Embassy with a ballpoint pen or on a typewriter. Please do not forget to sign the application on the 5th page and include your phone number, email address and postal service address for future communication 
  • two recent photographs
     
  • passport (you will submit the passport at the time of your appointment and it will be returned to you. You will resubmit your passport at the end of the application process for the issuance of the visa after the visa has been approved by the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic. 
     
  • biometric data (fingerprints)
     
  • document confirming the purpose of stay - confirmation of studies: The original or certified copy of the confirmation of enrollment into your studies issued by a Czech University (Acceptance Letter). This document must be in Czech language.
     
  • document confirming accommodation: The original or verified copy of your accommodation document is required. You can prove accommodation by, for example,  accommodation agreement, rent agreement, property ownership proof (purchase agreement, land register extract), dormitory document or confirmation on providing accommodation by the owner of the apartment (signature must be verified by a notary). How to prove accommodation is referred to in detail on the website of the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic; you are required to arrange accommodation before arriving in the Czech Republic. 
  • document confirming sufficient financial resources:when applying for a long term visa, you need to prove that you possess sufficient financial means for your stay in the Czech Republic. You can fund your stay in the Czech Republic and prove it by one of the following options:
    • ·         original and simple copy of an internationally recognized debit/credit card held in your name with a validity for at least the duration of your stay in the Czech Republic and original or verified copy of bank account  statement (in English) linked to the card (or an original or verified copy of the letter from the bank in English with stamp and signature). In the case of internet banking printouts, a bank stamp and signature confirming the authenticity is requested. You may cover the card number before you make a copy of it but don't cover the validity. A copy of the front side is sufficient;

      ·         a letter from a sponsor confirming the support of the applicant during his or her stay in the Czech Republic. It must be an original document with a notarized signature and presented with an official translation in the Czech language. Example: A parental letter confirming the financial situation of the student must be translated into the Czech language and notarized. Such letter must be accompanied by a bank statement of the parent (original or printout stamped and signed by the bank). The student must provide proof of ability to draw funds while in the Czech Republic, for example, ownership of a banking card linked to this account.

      ·         A student currently receiving a scholarship or grant must provide a confirmation in Czech or English language of such scholarship in original or verified copy.

      How much money needs to be in your bank account?

      The applicant is required to possess at least 15* 2,490 CZK.  This amount increases by two x 2,490 CZK per each full month = 37,350 CZK + 4,980 CZK for each full month. thus, for instance: This amount increases by two x 2,490 CZK per each full month = 37,350 CZK + 4,980 for each full month, for instance, for a stay from January 1st until June 30th it would be (15* 2,490) + (5*2*2,490) = 37,350 + 24,900 = 62 250 CZK.

      1 semester – for a stay from 1 September to 30 November, it would be (15*2490) + (2*2*2490) = 37,350 + 9960 = 47310 CZK (approximately 7000,- NIS for one semester according to the exchange rate valid in June 2020, the amount in NIS depends on the exchange rate CZK/NIS).

      1 year – for stay from 1 September 31 August it would be (15*2490) + (11*2*2490) = 37,350 + 54,780 = 92,130 CZK (approximately 13500,- NIS for one year according to the exchange rate valid in June 2020, the amount in NIS depends on the exchange rate CZK/NIS).

      Please note that the existential minimum is established by Czech law and can be changed every year.

  • criminal record extract: The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Tel Aviv, in accordance with par. 31(3)a of the Act No. 326/1999 Coll., on the Residence of Foreign nationals in the territory of the Czech Republic hereby requests that all applicants for a long term visa or residence permit, who will submit their applications at the Embassy in Tel Aviv submit Criminal History Background check issued by the State of Israel as well as Criminal History Background check from a country where they lived for 6 months or longer in the previous 3 years or an affidavit in case that country does not issue any such document.

    You have to submit an application to the Israel Police first. Under the law, the certificate is not given to the applicant but rather transferred to the official entity (in this case to the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Tel Aviv). You must collect the certificate from our Embassy and get an Apostille on it issued by the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Israel in Jerusalem. We can provide for you the official translation into Czech language if the Criminal History Background is in English. 

    Non-Israeli citizens: You need to submit a Criminal History Background from the country of your nationality. If you have lived in any other country besides Israel for 6 months or longer in the previous 3 years, you are required to submit the Criminal History Background issued by that respective country as well.
     
  • visa application fee: Visa fee is 2500 CZK for a long-term visa for the purpose of study. The fee must be paid in cash in NIS when applying for visa. The visa fee may change on a monthly basis due to the current exchange rate. The updated list of visa fees is on the website.

3. After your visa is approved by the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic and you were contacted by the Embassy to come and pick it up, you must submit:

  • Travel medical insurance: When submitting a visa application, travel health isn’t required, but the applicant must provide proof of holding travel medical insurance before the visa is affixed to his travel document. The insurance must cover the entire period of the applicant´s stay in the Czech Republic as determined by the validity of the visa. Travel medical insurance must cover the cost of emergency medical care, including medical evacuation or, in the event of death, repatriation of remains to the country that has issued the applicant´s travel document or to the applicant´s country of residence. The insurance policy must not exclude coverage for injuries and damage caused by the applicant´s intentional acts, injuries and damage caused by the fault or contributory fault on the part of the applicant, and injuries and damage caused by the consumption of alcohol, narcotic and psychotropic substances by the applicant. The minimum coverage is EUR 60 000 per one insured event without any coinsurance or copayment.  Travel medical insurance may be purchased from an insurance company licensed to sell such insurance in the Czech Republic. The recommended way is to obtain medical insurance from a company that appears on a list of authorized companies maintained by the Czech National Bank.

  • Insurance can also be purchased from an insurance company licensed to sell such insurance in any other Member State of the European Union or in any Contracting Party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area, or from an insurance company licensed to sell such insurance in the country that has issued the applicant´s travel document or in the applicant´s country of residence. Then the proof of travel medical insurance must be accompanied by a certified Czech translation of the insurance policy and general insurance terms and conditions, proving the existence of travel medical insurance, the scope of coverage, the amount of coverage (at least EUR 60 000), and proving that there is no coinsurance or co-payment.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

  • All visas must be approved by the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic prior to the Czech Embassy being able to issue the visa. No assurances regarding the issuance of visas can be given in advance. Therefore final travel plans or the purchase of non-refundable tickets should not be made until a visa has been issued.
  • The visa for a stay over 90 days is granted for a maximum length of 12 months.
  • While lodging the application, an interview with the applicant can be conducted. A written record of the interview can be a part of the application. A record will be written down in Czech language and will be signed by the applicant and the officer of the Consulate who will conduct the interview. In case you do not understand Czech you can bring an interpreter with you to translate the written record.
  • Student visas can only be issued by the same Embassy where the application for it was submitted. Hence, you cannot apply for a visa in Israel and pick it up in Europe or the Czech Republic. The Czech Embassy strongly recommends that applicants do not travel to the Czech Republic to begin their study programs without valid visas.
  • In case the visa has been refused, you have the right to appeal. The appeal should be addressed to the Department for Asylum and Migration Policy of the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic that made the decision about the application within 15 days after receiving the information about the refusal of the application.
  • The Consular Section of the Embassy of the Czech Republic does not provide translations of documents submitted within the visa application except the criminal history background document. List of translators can be found here.
