Czech author Jaroslav Hašek honoured in Tirana

Czech writer, humourist, satirist, journalist and bohemian Jaroslav Hašek and his “Good Soldier Švejk” were honoured during a dedicated literary event in Kadare House in Tirana. The gathering was in view of the 100th anniversary of the passing away of Jaroslav Hašek and the International Book’s Day on April 23rd.

Ambassador Karel Urban greeted the audience present and made a short introduction of Jaroslav Hašek’s writings and his recognized place in the Czech and worldwide literature. Meanwhile scholar and literary critic, Mr. Bajram Peçi spoke more in depth about the historical satire and the ineptitude of the figures in authority mentioned in the novel. Actor Rezart Veleshnja read parts of the book to reflect the main messages and key characters, while the legacy and the prominence of Jaroslav Hašek underlined the entire event.

The students gave spirit to the discussions on the character of Švejk, whom most of them knew already through the book translated into Albanian language, and the film based on the same novel.

The Good Soldier Švejk finds a respectable place in the heart of readers across Albania, and it is listed along with the top classic fiction characters of world literature.
