Ambassador Urban discussed the outcomes of the Czech Presidency of the EU Council with researchers, diplomats, and CSOs in Tirana

As the end of the Czech EU Council Presidency is coming slowly to an end by December 31st, 2022 the Czech Ambassador to Tirana H.E. Mr. Karel Urban met with researchers, diplomats, and CSOs at Tirana Times Library to discuss with them about the priorities, challenges, and the tangible results of the Czech Presidency in the light of the Russian occupation of Ukraine

In his evaluation, the Ambassador qualified the Russian aggression as inexcusable and threatening to the world peace, noting that it affected the priorities of the Presidency. Czechia quickly adapted to the new geopolitical situation in Europe and took the leadership role – the Ambassador said. He concluded that the European Union has shown unity, and humanism towards the Ukrainian migrants in the face of such aggression, saying that nearly half a million Ukrainians are now living in Czech homes, fully integrated with jobs and children in schools.

Also, the EU enlargement remained high on the Czech Presidency agenda, and it took important steps during July – December 2022 - said Ambassador Urban. “Czechia has labored to push forward the EU integration processes for the Western Balkans” – he said mentioning the opening of the talks with Albania and North Macedonia in July (France being also key to the achievement of an agreement), and the granting of the EU candidate status for BiH among others. He recalled also the Ministerial Forum on Justice and Home Affairs in November (in Tirana), and the first ever EU-Western Balkans Summit held outside the EU during December (in Tirana) finding it as very successful.

The diplomats and academics present commented on the topic and commended the Czech leadership of the EU Council.  Also students of political sciences joined the vivid discussion.
