Archaeologists from Masaryk University explore south Albania

The archaeologists of the Department of Archaeology and Museology, Masaryk University in Brno, started an archaeological exploration in Nivica village in Tepelena district as of July 1st, 2019.

While this year’s programme comprises the exploration of Gusmar hilltop site, the focus of the search will be the chronology of the early settlements in Nivice, the study of historical memory of the local population, and the development of a strategy for future archaeological research in the terrain. The team will also search for new archaeological sites in the region.

Nivica presents high archaeological interest also due to the importance of historical routes permeating the region, among them the famous Roman Via Egnatia. The archaeological discoveries will act as tourist destinations to be visited along with other remarkable sites in the region.
