Prague Dialogue on the Indo-Pacific discussed one of the Czech EU Presidency priorities

On 13 and 14 June 2022 the High-Level Dialogue on the Indo-Pacific took place in the Czernin Palace on the invitation of the Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský . The first foreign-policy event of the incoming Czech Presidency in the Council of the European Union was attended by more than 170 participants from fifty countries of four continents. The political representatives from the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and NATO also joined the Dialogue.

"Indo-Pacific represents one of the geographical foreign-policy priorities for the Czech Presidency. Our ambition with this event was to invite representatives of countries and companies that share common interest to cooperate in the region. I see the word ´dialogue´ as key for the EU cooperation with the Indo-Pacific", stated the Czech Minister who opened the event together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, Retno Marsudi.

Due to the current situation in Eastern Europe and its impacts on international relations, the Prague Dialogue has discussed security related issues in the broader sense of the word: from territorial integrity, to economic, climate, food, cyber and supply chains security. "The purpose of the Dialogue was to search for the ways to strengthen resilience against these global challenges", added Minister Lipavský.

Economic security was among the topics too. The Czech Minister of trade and industry Jozef Síkela and Japanese state minister for economic security Keitaro Ohno emphasized that faster conclusion of free trade agreements with the Indo-Pacific partners will contribute to its strengthening. At a separate bilateral meeting, they then discussed the Czech and Japanese response to current challenges. K. Ohno introduced a new Japanese law to promote economic security in the development of new technologies or critical infrastructure protection.

On the margins of the Dialogue Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský has met a number of partners. He discussed EU-ASEAN relations and Czech Presidency priorities with the Foreign Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia Retno Marsudi. "We discussed the EU Strategy for cooperation with the Indo-Pacific, but also the priorities of the Indonesian Presidency in G20", said Minister Lipavský. From this year´s Indonesian G20 Presidency perspective, Minister Retno has called for finding common solutions to global increase in energy and food prices.

Minister Lipavský also held a bilateral meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Timor-Leste, Adaljiza Magno, who has arrived in the Czech Republic for the historically first visit at this level. The ministers agreed to mutually enhance the diplomatic presence. "East Timor will consider accrediting its diplomatic mission and Czechia is considering opening its honorary consulate that would support the activities of our non-resident embassy for East Timor with the seat in Jakarta", stated minister Lipavský.

Next to the partners from the Indo-Pacific region, the Czech Minister also met his Lithuanian counterpart Gabrielius Landsbergis.
