Peace Ceremonies in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 2022

This year, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki marked the 77th anniversary of the dropping of atomic bombs, which led to the capitulation of Japan in World War II.

The Ambassador of the Czech Republic, Martin Tomčo, was present at the Peace Ceremony in Hiroshima on 6th August 2022, where he laid a floral wreath at the memorial on behalf of the Czech Republic and with other participants honored the memory of the victims of this historical tragic event.

It was 77 years ago when the Little Boy atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. The Peace Memorial building, also known as the Atomic Dome, is located in central Hiroshima, just 160 meters from the blast. The building was initially designed and built in 1915 by the Czech architect Jan Letzl, it served as the Hiroshima Prefectural Palace for product exhibitions. In 1996, the building was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In Hiroshima, the Ambassador also met with the rector of Hiroshima Shudo University, Mrs. Izumi Yano. He gave her the complete works of Václav Havel in Japanese translations as a symbolic gift to the university to commemorate the ceremonial unveiling of Havel´s Place, an artwork inspired by the thoughts and actions of the internationally recognized first Czech president, which took place at the university on December 7, 2021, and where the Havel´s Place is now situated.

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Tokyo, represented by Mrs. Vladimira Hirsh, Deputy Head of Mission, attended also this year´s Peace Ceremony in Nagasaki, which took place on August 9, 2022.

Nagasaki was the second city where a nuclear bomb was dropped in 1945 during World War II. The Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, which construction was finished in 2002, is a place where visitors may commemorate those who lost their lives as a result of the atomic bombing and offer prayers for everlasting peace.
