Today, January 12, 2016, marks the 96th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Czech Republic and Japan. This event was preceded by intensive cooperation of the Japanese government with the Czechoslovak legions in Siberia, their ensuing transport to their homeland via Tokyo and the recognition of the Czechoslovak National Council by Japan.

In the past year, the Embassy of the Czech Republic dedicated a lot of efforts to the commemoration of these events. A monument to members of Czechoslovak legions, who lost their lives in Japan as a result of injuries suffered during the the tumultuous period of civil war in Russia, was unveiled in the cemetery of the city of Fuchu in Tokyo and an exhibition dedicated to the memory of the Czechoslovak legions was opened in the premises of the Embassy.

Admittedly, those 96 years had some specific phases, such as the Second World War or the subsequent period of the Soviet control of our country. In spite of these temporary declines, the relations of our two countries have reached an excellent level during the last 25 years and have created a strong potential for their future active development. The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Tokyo is determined to do its best to develop this potential so that the approaching centenary celebration may proudly boast a number of utmost successes in our bilateral relations.
