The Embassy handed over a cup to the winner of the sumo tournament

Deputy head of the Embassy, Mr. Milan Slanec, visited Osaka on 26 and 27 March 2016. On the occasion of the visit, he handed over a cup to the winner of the sumo tournament  and met members of the Osaka Association of Friends of the Czech Republic.

The winner of one of the greatest tournaments in sumo, the Japanese wrestling, which takes place every March in the city of Osaka, for several decades traditionally receives a diploma and a hand-cut cup made of the Czech crystal from the hands of the ambassador of the Czech Republic. This year his role was taken over by the political counsellor of the Embassy, Mr. Milan Slanec. The tournament was won by yakuzuna Hakuho Sho. Mr. Slanec took advantage of his stay in Osaka to meet members of the the Osaka Association of Friends of the Czech Republic which is headed by prof. Kenji Mitani. During the very pleasant meeting Mr. Slanec highly appreciated activities of the association and expressed his deep gratitude to its members. In his speech, he talked about the 700th anniversary of the birthday of the Czech king and Roman emperor, Charles IV, and he mentioned also some historical parallels and topical political issues.
