Visit of the city Susaki in the Kochi Prefecture

The city that hosts the Czech Olympic athletes preparing for SOG 2020 has experienced another Czech visit. The Chef de cuisine of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Tokyo, Mr. Pavel Karpíšek, was in charge of the cooking course in Susaki.

The spread of the good reputation of the Czech Republic is possible through various ways. In addition to the musical and visual arts, the culinary art is particularly pleasant. Food connects and thanks to perceptions easily overcomes the language barrier. On February 12 – 14, 2019, Mr. Kousaku Kusunose, the mayor of the Susaki City, and his deputy Mr. Koji Yokobatake welcomed the chief cook of the Czech Embassy, Mr. Pavel Karpíšek, and the interpreter Mrs. Sarie Murakami. They were, by far, not the first Czech visitors because in Susaki there is a training center for the Czech Olympic representatives in canoeing, who include the Fuksas siblings. The city has built new bungalows and a boatyard for the athletes and is trying to provide the best possible conditions for the preparation for the SOG 2020 in Tokyo. Visitors could see the sports facilities with Mr. Norihiso Katata, Deputy Director of the Susaki City Projects Support Department.

Local residents interested in acquainting themselves with Czech cuisine could sign up for a one-day cooking course and try to prepare Czech potato soup, rolled fillet with rice, potato pancakes and apple strudel. Positive feedback on the whole event assured us that we have been able to consolidate the already great Czech-Japanese relations there. The coverage of this event was broadcasted by the Kochi TV in the same evening, which only confirms the importance of the whole event by the locals. The aim of the embassy is to repeat the similar scenario, invite the Japanese specialists who take care of the Czech athletes in the Susaki training center and share with them the knowledge of Czech nutrition consultants who take care about our champions in the Czech Republic.

In return, the hosts introduced local food products, such as soy sauce with yuzu (a bitter citrus fruit), honey or fish snacks to the chef. Together, they also visited a local cutlery shop, which prides itself on an age-long tradition and its own produced steel.
