Visit of Genkai Nuclear Power Station

At the invitation of Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and JAIF International Cooperation Center (JICC), three representatives of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Tokyo visited the Genkai Nuclear Power Station on January 16th, 2020. Genkai Power Station is located on the Kyushu Island in Prefecture Saga. The visit was focused on familiarization with the operation of one of the few re-started nuclear power plants following the Fukushima accident in 2011, and especially on the presentation of significantly strengthened safety measures.

The Genkai Nuclear Power Station is one of the few currently functioning Japanese nuclear power plants. Its two reactors of the PWR type (Pressurized Water Reactors) have a total power of 2,360 MW, covering a significant part of the energy consumption of Kyushu.

As a result of the Fukushima nuclear accident in March 2011, all 48 nuclear reactors in Japan had to be shut down and very strict new safety standards were introduced. In 2013, the Genkai Power Station applied for review of suitability under these new criteria and subsequently, two of its four reactors were put back into operation in the year 2018.

The safety of operations and the prevention of possible accidents in particular due to natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons or tsunamis are given the utmost attention in Genkai Nuclear Power Station and security measures are several times reinforced. Moreover, Genkai is located in one of the tectonically least active areas in Japan.
