Celebrations of 20 years of Czechia in the EU in Japan

On April 25, 2024, as part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the largest enlargement of the European Union in its history, Embassy of the Czech Republic in Tokyo, together with nine other countries, commemorated two decades of its membership in the EU. In the premises of the Europa House (Delegation of the European Union to Japan), the Embassy co-organized two events that provided a platform for the exchange of views on the achievements and challenges of EU membership over the past 20 years, supported dialogue between experts, diplomats and the public, and emphasized the importance of international cooperation and integration.
The first event was an afternoon seminar entitled "20 years in the EU: breakthroughs achieved and lessons learned", at which selected experts from (in 2004) acceding member states spoke. After an opening speech by the Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Japan, who moderated the discussion, video contributions from recognized personalities of the Committee on International Affairs and EU Policies were screened. The main point of the program was the subsequent panel discussion of six selected personalities from various professional fields, in which the Czech Special Envoy for Energy Security Mr. Václav Bartuška and Mr. Makoto Nagakawa, the former Ambassador of Japan to Slovakia, also spoke.

The second event was a gala evening reception, where VIP guests from the political, business and diplomatic fields gathered for the special evening.
Both events confirmed the excellent cooperation within the EU member states in Japan, when it was possible to prepare and appropriately present the anniversary of the enlargement and the EU itself in Japan with the contribution of all the "new" EU member states and the highly proactive participation of the local EU Delegation.
