Inauguration of ice sculptures of Prague monuments in Ulaanbaatar

On December 16, the Embassy of the Czech Republic to Mongolia began celebrating the 70th anniversary of Czech-Mongolian diplomatic relations by illuminating the ice sculptures of Charles Bridge and Cathedral of St.Vitus, Wenceslas and Adalbert on the main square of Ulaanbaatar.

The author is the well-known Mongolian artist Batmunkh Tserendash, who has been doing sculpture for nearly twenty years and was awarded first place for his ice and snow sculptures last year in the Irkutsk International Competition. He worked on sculptures of Prague monuments with a five-member team for two weeks. Sculpture ice comes from an artificial lake on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar Khan-Uul district, and in the coolest capital of the world, the statues will be on display until the Mongolian holiday of Tsagaan sar, last week of February.

In his opening Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Mongolia Jiří Brodský mentioned the history of both landmarks of Prague. He emphasized that the ambition of the Embassy is to commemorate the anniversary not only among diplomats, but also through a series of events for the Mongolian public focused on the presentation of Czech technology, film production, jazz scene, street art and Czech sports. He recalled that the author of the 70th anniversary logo depicted on both towers of the Charles Bridge statue is the Mongolian designer Sergelen Purvee and the ice sculpture project was created thanks to the sponsorship of two Czech companies operating in the Czech-Mongolian relations.

The ceremony of the statues was attended by Deputy Mayor of Ulaanbaatar Mr. Batsuuri Otgonsukh, guests from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives of Mongolian companies, and a number of Mongolian graduates of Czech universities. The statues of Prague monuments are very popular with Mongolian media and passers-by. Therefore, the sculptor also created a special sitting at the icy Christmas tree for children, where families with children are photographed.
