Discussion with the director of the Prague Zoo about the project "Return of Wild Horses"

On 16 December 2020, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Mongolia and the Fresh Water Resource and Nature Conservation Center in Ulaanbaatar organized an online discussion with the director of the Prague Zoo, Miroslav Bobek.
 

The Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Mongolia Jiří Brodský, the Director of the Fresh Water Resource and Nature Conservation Center Shijirbold Dagvasambuu and the Director of the Khustai Nuruu Dashpurev Tserendeleg National Park participated in the discussion focused on the project "Return of the Wild Horses" implemented by the Prague Zoo in cooperation with the Czech Army and the Ministry of the Environment of Mongolia.

Director Bobek reminded the history of Převalský's horse breeding in the Prague Zoo. Already in the 1950s, the then director of the Zoo, Cyril Purkyně, visited Mongolia, and since 1959, the Prague Zoo has been keeping the world studbook of Převalský's horse. Since 2011, nine transports have taken place and Prague Zoo has already transported 30 horses to Gobi B thanks to cooperation with the Czech Army, 4 horses were transported by Czech army plane to Gobi B from Khustai Nuruu Park. Director Bobek also mentioned material support to the Gobi B Strictly Protected Area: new cars, motorcycles for rangers were built, a guard post, a hayloft were built, new wells were drilled, a hospital in Bulgan was repaired, etc. He spoke in more detail about future cooperation between Prague Zoo and the Ministry of Environment nad tourism of Mongolia.

Ambassador Brodský expressed support for these plans and presented the main projects of Czech-Mongolian cooperation in the field of environment: water management, removal of environmental burdens, air quality and waste management, geology, forestry and ichthyology. He mentioned the forthcoming projects financed by the European Union, in which the Czech Republic would like to follow up on bilateral development cooperation, especially in the field of forestry and water management.

The discussion held as part of a series of "Green Talk" discussions organized by the Fresh Water Resource and Nature Conservation Center was attended by executives of the Mongolian Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Universities, International Takhi Group, Director of Gobi B Ganbaatar Oyunsaikhan, Prague Zoo and other guests from public.
