ČR vystoupila na slavnostním zasedání k 70. výročí ECOSOC

Dne 22. ledna 2016 proběhlo v New Yorku slavnostní zasedání při příležitosti 70. výročí působení Hospodářské a sociální rady OSN (ECOSOC).

Text projevu velvyslankyně ČR při OSN v New Yorku Edity Hrdé:

Mr. President, excellencies, distinguished colleagues,

I would like to appreciate the convening of this inspirational meeting. While fully supporting the statement made by the EU, I would like to make a few remarks in my national capacity.

The Czech Republic became a member of the Economic and Social Council at the beginning of this month. We feel it is a good omen that the start of our current membership coincides with the ECOSOC’s 70th anniversary. The Czech Republic attaches great importance to the Council and has a long-standing tradition of participating in its work. Czechoslovakia was one of the founding members of ECOSOC, and was part of its very first bureau – in the person of Vice-President Jan Papánek. The last time the Czech Republic had the honour to serve on the ECOSOC’s bureau was nearly twenty years ago, indeed when the Council was steered by Ambassador Kovanda, who spoke on the panel of former presidents a few minutes ago.

2015 was a truly memorable year for the international community. We succeeded in concluding groundbreaking agreements in Sendai, Addis Ababa, here in New York, in Paris, as well as in Nairobi. This year must be devoted to translating these agreements into our day-to-day business and, vitally, delivering on the pledges made. Moreover, Agenda 2030 and Addis Ababa Action Agenda entrusted ECOSOC, as well as the HLPF under its auspices, with additional important tasks.

This is why now, perhaps more than ever, we need a strong, coherent and focused ECOSOC. We need an ECOSOC that operates as effectively and efficiently as possible, that works closely with the rest of the UN system, and that brings added value in its unique coordination and oversight role. We need an ECOSOC that promotes a balanced integration of the three dimensions of sustainable development. In short, we need an ECOSOC that will live up to the expectations expressed by our heads of state and government last September.

Mr. President,

The Czech Republic stands ready to do its part as a new member of the ECOSOC. You and other members of the bureau can count on our unwavering support. As an active and cooperative member, the Czech Republic will want to promote the Council’s work on topics of substance that are close to our hearts – be it education, human rights, gender equality, inclusive economic growth, or environmental protection. We feel that hard work is the best present for ECOSOC’s 70th birthday – and the best guarantee that it will be here 70 years from now.

Thank you.
