Ambassador Chatardová spoke on cyber security during a Security Council meeting

Estonia, which presides the Security Council of the UN in May, organized an open virtual meeting on cyber security on May 22, 2020. Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic Marie Chatardová spoke among others and highlighted the importance that the Czech Republic places on this topic.

The opening statement was delivered by the Prime Minister of Estonia, Jüri Ratas. After the opening statement speeches were delivered by Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, James Lewis, Senior VP and the Director of the Technology and Public Policy Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and David Koh, chief executive of the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore. More than UN 50 member states delivered their statements in the open debate.

Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the United Nations, Marie Chatardová, spoke on behalf of the Czech Republic and stressed that the digital age brings many opportunities but also new dependencies, risks, and threats. Malicious cyber activities are posing a growing threat to our citizens, undermine trust, and threaten our collective efforts to maintain international peace and security. The Czech Republic is primarily committed to upholding ruled-based international order in cyberspace, securing the existing ICT supply chains, and supporting that medical facilities are included as an indispensable part of critical infrastructure. In this regard, Ambassador Chatardová condemned cyber attacks against medical facilities and called on the international community to take steps to protect the medical sector against malicious cyber activities.
