Czech delegation at the UN Water Conference

On 22 – 24 March 2023, the United Nations hosted the Conference on the Midterm Comprehensive Review of the Implementation of the Goals of the International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development” 2018 – 2028 (so called UN Water Conference). The delegation of the Czech Republic was led by Mr. Tomáš Tesař, Deputy Minister of the Environment who delivered a national statement at the plenary session.

The UN Water Conference was opened by H.M. King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and H.E. Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan as co-chairs. The opening segment featured statements delivered by H.E. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, H.E. Csaba Kőrösi, President of the 77th Session of the General Assembly, and H.E. Lachezara Stoeva, President of the Economic and Social Council. Two hundred representatives of the UN Member States, agencies, funds and programmes of the UN system, as well as stakeholders delivered their statements at the plenary segment. The statement on behalf of the European Union was delivered by H.E. Dubravka Šuica, Vice President of the European Commission. The Conference consisted of the following five interactive thematic dialogues: (1) water for health, (2) water for development, (3) water for climate, resilience and environment, (4) water for cooperation, and (5) Water Action Decade, as well as seven hundred side events. The Conference was also an opportunity to launch the Team Europe Initiative on Transboundary Water Management in Africa – A Support Development and Regional Integration, in which the European Commission, the Commission for African Union, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Slovenia, Sweden, and the European Investment Bank take part. During its closing ceremony, the Conference welcomed the so-called Water Action Agenda as a set of voluntary commitments by Member States, UN agencies, funds and programmes and stakeholders, aimed at accelerating progress towards the goals of the International Decade of Action "Water for Sustainable Development" 2018 - 2028 and the SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation), as well as other water-related SDGs. At the end of the Conference, 689 commitments totalling USD 400 billion had been registered.
