General Assembly adopted a resolution on Responsibility to Protect co-sponsored by the Czech Republic

During the annual debate in the General Assembly of the United Nations on Responsibility to Protect (R2P), the Czech Republic represented by the Permanent Representative Marie Chatardová, expressed the view that the responsibility of the state to protect its populations from crimes again humanity, genocide and other atrocities is the substance of the social contract, which gives states their “raison d’être”.

Since 2005, when the R2P concept was unanimously adopted during the World Summit, it has not lost any of its relevance. For this reason, the Czech Republic was one of the main co-sponsors of the resolution on Responsibility to Protect, which was adopted on May 18, 2021 by the General Assembly. This resolution puts the R2P concept on the annual agenda of the General Assembly and allows for more substantial dialogue between states and prepares for effective application of the concept in the future.
