Minister Petříček spoke during a Security Council meeting on the occasion of 75th anniversary of the end of WWII in Europe

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Mr. Tomáš Petříček, spoke during a meeting of the UN Security Council that took place on May 8, 2020 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. The video conference was organized under the chairmanship of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, which is serving as the Security Council president in May.

Opening statements were delivered by the EU’s High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borell, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs of the UN, Rosemary DiCarlo, and a history professor from Yale University, Timothy Snyder. Opening words were followed by the statements of UN Security Council member states, over 40 ministers of foreign affairs of other UN member states and finally by permanent representatives of other UN countries. The aim of the meeting was not only to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe but also to reflect on the need to prevent military conflict and the role of the UN in this area.
