The Czech Republic delivered a statement on behalf of the Visegrad Group on the ICJ Report in the UN General Assembly

On 30 October 2019, Director of the International Law Department, Mr. Petr Válek, delivered a statement on behalf of the Visegrad Group Countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) in the UN General Assembly in New York during the debate on the annual report of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Mr. Válek appreciated the work of the ICJ, which - as a principal judicial organ of the United Nations - significantly contributes to the development of international law as well as to the strengthening of the rule of law on the international level. He stressed that a peaceful settlement of disputes between States is a prerequisite for maintaining international peace and security. He further emphasized that provisions allowing for peaceful settlement of disputes by the International Court of Justice should form part of multilateral treaties concluded within the UN.
