The Czech Republic successfully participated in HLPF 2019

The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) organized under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council of the UN (ECOSOC) took place in New York between July 9 and July 19, 2019. Delegation of the Czech Republic consisted of representatives of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of the Environment, Ministry for Regional Development, Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and the Chamber of Deputies. Minister for Regional Development, Klára Dostálová, served as the head of delegation. Delegation members took active part in the discussions about thematic review of particular sustainable development goals (SDG), presentations of voluntary national reviews (VNR) and accompanying side-events.

HLPF 2019 was centered around “Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”. It was also the last HLPF meeting in the four-year cycle of Agenda 2030 implementation. This year’s meeting discussed six SDGs (4 – quality education; 8 – decent work and economic growth; 10 – reduced inequalities; 13 – climate action; 16 – peace, justice, and strong institutions and 17 – partnership for the goals).

Global Report on Sustainable Development 2019 and the Report on Financing for Development 2019 have been introduced during the session. Voluntary National Reviews (VNR) were presented by 47 countries (40 for the first time and 7 for the second time). Panel discussion on the past 4 years of VNR took place and focused on problematic points and successes in the implementation of different SDGs by countries participating in VNR. During the general debate in the high-level segment, over 160 member states, state groups, international organizations, and UN agencies took the floor.

Minister for Regional Development of the Czech Republic, Klára Dostálová, spoke on behalf of the Czech Republic. The HLPF meeting also hosted 156 side-events and a panel discussion on the experiences from the first HLPF cycle. This year’s meeting resulted in a chair’s summary.
