The Czech Republic supported the strengthening of mediation role in UN SC activities

Permanent Missions of Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and Vietnam organized an Arria-Formula meeting of the UN Security Council on mediation on October 9, 2020. Main theme of the event were discussions on options to strengthen the role of mediation in the UN and new ways for the UN Security Council to support peace processes.

Examples of best practice were introduced by N. Haysom, Special Representative of the Secretary General on Sudan, N. Gherman, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Central Asia and Head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia and M. Ibn Chambas, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel. The discussion was within the framework provided by a study of prof. L. Nathan from the University of Notre Dame, which identifies ways for fulfilling the potential of the UN Security Council in crisis solutions and supporting peaceful resolution of conflicts. Among the speakers was also the Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the United Nations, M. Chatardová. The Czech Republic as a new member of the Group of Friends of Mediation supports strengthening of the role of mediation within the United Nations and also more intensive coordination with the UN Security Council.
