The Czech Republic supported the Leaders' Pledge for Nature

The Czech Republic together with over 70 member states of the United Nations supported the Leaders’ Pledge for Nature titled “United to reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 for Sustainable Development”, which attests to the global ambitions of head of states and governments of the UN member states, the UN system, private sector, civic society, non-governmental organizations, local governments and other key stakeholders to promote biodiversity before the UN Summit on Biodiversity on September 30, 2020.

The pledges were officially declared during the high-level event, which took place on September 28, 2020 on the margins of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly. The high-level event was attended by the President of the UN General Assembly, Volkan Bozikar, UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, 40 heads of states or governments and other signatories from the private sector, NGOs, civic society, and other stakeholders.

During his video speech, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Andrej Babiš, said that the solution to the global environmental crisis and the decline of biodiversity are our common responsibility. He noted that we should build on the experience of Covid-19 to achieve a transformative change of our society, as it might be the only way to give our children a chance to live in the world where they can enjoy health, wellbeing, and prosperity. He assured that the Czech Republic wants to be part of such solution.

The text of the pledge, current list of signatories and recorded speeches of leaders are available at the website of the Leaders’ Pledge for Nature.
