UN General Assembly reappoints A. Guterres Secretary-General

On Friday 18 June 2021 the UN General Assembly unanimously reappointed António Guterres Secretary-General of the United Nations for his second term from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2026. UN General Assembly session was preceded by closed meeting  of the UN Security Council on 8 June, at which the Council, also unanimously, adopted a resolution recommending to the General Assembly Guterres' appointment.

Following his re-election, Mr. Guterres took the solemn oath to the President of the General Assembly, Mr. V. Bozkir. In his subsequent address to the General Assembly, Secretary-General outlined the challenges ahead of him in the coming period. These include the international community's ongoing efforts to eliminate the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, gender issues, conflict prevention, reduction of global inequality and poverty, UN reform, etc. As Mr. Guterres concluded his statement, the assembly chamber burst into applause.
