Professor Sturma, the Czech Candidate for the International Law Commission, Launched the Czech Yearbook of International Law

On October 25, 2010, Mr. Pavel Sturma, who is the Vice-Dean and Professor of the Charles University Law School in Prague, started the campaign for his election to the International Law Commission for the period 2012-2016 by launching the Czech Yearbook of International Law. The event took place in Hotel Hilton, just a few steps from the United Nations Headquarters. At the beginning, Professor Sturma was introduced by Ambassador Martin Palous, Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the UN, and Mr. Milan Dufek, Acting Director of the Legal and Consular Section of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Professor Sturma then, in his capacity of the President of the Czech Society for International Law, presented the first volume of the recently published Czech Yearbook of International Law. In this context, he made a few remarks on the history and developments of the Czech doctrine of international law. Furthermore, he expressed his views on the future of codification of international law and briefly covered also some of the topics dealt currently by the International Law Commission. Subsequently, he engaged in an informal lunch discussion on these issues with the representatives of the 23 UN Member States who came to meet him. On October 26, 2010, Professor Sturma delivered the statement of the Czech Republic on the topic of “Reservations to Treaties” in the Sixth (Legal) Committee and, during the whole “International Law Week”, continued to meet the members of other delegations to the Sixth Committee on a bilateral basis in order to ask for their support of his candidature.
