Call for Applications Jan Patočka Junior Visiting Fellowship 2022–2023

The Jan Patočka Fellowship Program aims to foster research inspired by Jan Patočka’s thought and committed to his legacy. The fellowships enable Czech senior and junior researchers to work on a project of their own choice. The fellowships are open to all academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Research proposals related to one of the Institute’s main research fields are strongly encouraged.

The Czech philosopher Jan Patočka (1907–1977) is considered one of the most important Central European thinkers of the twentieth century. Having studied with Husserl and Heidegger in Freiburg in the 1930s, he applied phenomenological thought in an innovative way to problems of politics, history and culture. With a few short exceptions, Patočka was banned from teaching and publishing in communist Czechoslovakia. However, he became an intellectual and moral authority, most notably through his legendary underground seminars. Patočka was a co-founder and speaker of the civil rights movement Charter 77. He died on March 13, 1977 after a series of police interrogations. The significance of his work for the political idea of Europe is finally gaining appreciation today. This fellowship program is generously supported by the Foreign Ministry of the Czech Republic and dedicated to commemorating Jan Patočka’s name and work.
