(This article expired 31.12.2013.)

On 29th May 2013 in the gallery of Association of Lithuanian artists in the center of Vilnius, the opening of the exhibition “Selection from Platinum Collection” took place. At the exhibition visitors could see works of famous Czech photographer Robert Vano.

Due to quite significant conservativeness of Lithuanian society (Vano’s homosexuality is not a secret and roughly half of the exhibited pieces were man’s nude photographs), organizers had problems to find a gallery which would be brave enough to exhibit the Robert Vano’s works. Initially, five galleries showed interest to introduce this exhibition. Nevertheless they all changed their mind in the end.

The exhibition was opened by the chairman of the Association of Lithuanian artists E. Utariene, who mentioned traditional ties between Czech and Lithuanian culture and expressed interest in further cooperation in the sphere of modern art. The Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Lithuania R. Pech introduced the exhibition and said few words about colorful life of Robert Vano. He emphasized that Vano is nowadays using very rare technique called “platinun print” thanks to which are his photographs so extraordinary. His Excellency Ambassador R. Pech also mentioned that R. Vano is the person who thanks to his unique personality helps to cultivate the environment of tolerance towards sexual minorities in the Czech Republic. The opening was attended also by V. Simonko, the chairman of the Lithuanian Gay League, who thanked the ambassador for organizing such exhibition which helps to better understanding in relatively homophobic Lithuania.
