Canceled - Book Presentation: Bohemian Stories w/author Renáta Fučíková

Date: 05 March 2020 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Venue: Czech Embassy

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED!
Author Renáta Fučíková will discuss her book Bohemian Stories, an illustrated history of Czechs in the United States, on March 5, 2020, at 6 pm. The event commemorates the 170th anniversary of the birth of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and International Women’s Day.

In Bohemian Stories, Renáta Fučíková presents a graphic journey through the history of Czechs in the United States, capturing the bonds between the two countries. Short texts and vivid illustrations create a portrait of composer Antonín Dvořák’s life in America, reveal the stories of politicians Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and Madeleine Albright, and celebrate the accomplishments of astronaut Eugene Cernan and sports legend Martina Navrátilová, among others. Readers join Czech immigrants as they settle the barren prairies of the Midwest and help build the streets and neighborhoods of Chicago and New York, and experience the success of artists and athletes who found a new home in the United States.

This book was conceived and supported by the Czech-American community in Chicago.

About the Author: Renáta Fučíková is a renowned illustrator and author of literature for children and young adults. She is the recipient of numerous prestigious international awards, including several Golden Ribbons as well as first prize at the Biennial of Illustration in Tehran (1997) and the Grand Prix at the Biennial of Illustrations in Zagreb, Croatia (2018). She was nominated for the Czech literature award Magnesia Litera as well as for the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award three times. She currently teaches students of Media and Didactic Illustration at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Czech Republic.
