Classic Film: Playing with the Devil

Bistro Bohem will screen director Josef Mach’s classic fairy tale comedy "Playing with the Devil" (Hrátky s čertem) on Dec. 20, at 7 pm. The film follows a soldier who must take on hell to rescue the souls of two women. The screening is a part of the ongoing Film and Beer Series in collaboration with the Embassy of the Czech Republic. 

A princess (Alena Vránová) and her servant Katie (Eva Klepáčová) desire handsome husbands. The devil Lucius tricks them into signing a contract for their souls by promising to fulfill their wishes. When a fearless soldier named Martin (Josef Bek) happens upon their contracts, he vows to keep the women safe. However, the sly devil Dr. Solferna tempts the soldier into a game of cards, whereby he loses his coat which contain the signed contracts. Martin must take on all of hell to save the women, but is it already too late? Find out in an evening of beer and film at Bistro Bohem!

About the series:
This marks the fifth year of the film and beer series at Bistro Bohem. This year, the series focuses on Czech comedies from the 1930s-70s, with such prominent directors as Martin Frič and Václav Vorlíček. All films will screen in Czech with English subtitles. Each screening includes one free beer as well as an introduction by a representative from the Czech Embassy. All screenings are subject to change.
