Concert: Musical Bridge: Brno/Philadelphia

Cellist Štěpán Filípek and pianist Katelyn Bouska will perform the concert "Musical Bridge: Brno/Philadelphia", featuring the works of Czech and American masters, including Leoš Janáček’s Pohádka (Fairy Tale) and Po zarostlém chodníčku (On an Overgrown Path), Antonín Dvořák’s Klid lesa (Silent Woods), Miloslav Ištvan’s Cello Sonata, as well as Samuel Barber’sCello Sonata No. 2 and Jeremy Gill’s Dos sonetos de amor (Two Love Sonnets) on April 24, at 6 pm.  Enjoy an evening of music with this talented duo at the Czech Embassy.

BIOGRAPHIES:
With performances described as “musically evocative” and a skill at engaging audiences in the musical dialogue, Katelyn Bouska is a frequent solo and collaborative musician. Active in concerts in the United States, she also frequently performs abroad including venues in Canada, France, Italy, Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, and the Philippines. With her ability to perform a broad range of repertoire ranging from early music to the most contemporary, she is at ease on clavichord, harpsichord, fortepiano and modern piano. In addition to her D.M.A. in Piano Performance she also holds graduate degrees in piano pedagogy, harpsichord performance and collaborative piano. She is currently on faculty at the Curtis Institute of Music and Temple University in Philadelphia.

Štěpán Filípek studied at the Prague Conservatory in the class of prof. František Pišinger. He continued to study music at the Music faculty of JAMU in Brno, under prof. Miroslav Zicha. Afterwards, he completed his PhD at JAMU advised by prof. Jozef Podhoranský – cello and prof. Jindřiška Bártová – theory. Later, he studied composition with prof. Radomír Ištván at the Brno Conservatory. Since 2007, he has been a member of the Janáček Opera Orchestra of the National Theatre of Brno. His main focus is the interpretation of contemporary classical music. He performs often in ensembles such as the Berg Orchestra, BCO or Ensemble Recherche. He performed as a soloist with the Plzeň Philharmonic and the Moravian Philharmonic of Olomouc. He’s a cellist in the Miloslav Ištvan Quartet, and he collaborates with Czech Broadcast in Brno on documenting the works of Moravian composers for cello and piano.
