Film: I, Olga Hepnarová

Date: 12 December 2016 9:25 PM - 11:25 PM, Venue: AFI Silver Theater

The AFI Silver Theater will screen the film  "I, Olga Hepnarová"  (Ja, Olga Hepnarová) as part of the AFI European Union Film Showcase on December 12, at 9:25 pm and Dec. 14 at 9:25 pm.  The film chronicles that last woman sentenced to the death penalty in the former Czechoslovakia.

In 1973, 22-year-old Olga Hepnarová drove down a Prague sidewalk, killing eight and injuring a dozen more. Hospitalized as a teen following a suicide attempt, she had suffered a troubled family life and intolerance over her homosexual leanings. In a letter she mailed to newspapers prior to committing the mass murder, Hepnarová cataloged a lifetime of mistreatment and described herself as "a wreck, ruined by people…I choose TO PAY BACK MY HATERS." Michalina Olszanska gives a powerful performance as the haunted Hepnarová in this sober, probing examination of a square peg relentlessly hammered by a repressive society. (~AFI Silver Theater)
