Film & Beer Series: Elementary School

Date: 17 July 2018 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM, Venue: Bistro Bohem

"Elementary School"(Obecná škola) is a cinematographic childhood memory of renowned writer Zdeněk Svěrák, filled with humor and wit, and directed by his son Jan Svěrák. In the film, a young boy looks up to his new teacher, only to realize that he is not quite who he says he is.

About the Film:
Set in a Prague suburb shortly after World War II, a new teacher arrives at a boy's school and soon becomes an admired figure to his students and the townspeople. The story revolves around young Eda and his relationship with the two authority figures in his life – his father and his teacher Hnízdo. Using strict discipline and stories about his experiences in the war, Hnízdo manages to bring order to a classroom full of obnoxious children who sent their last teacher to the madhouse. The film takes place in the first year after the war in an atmosphere of reborn freedom and new hope. (Directed by Jan Svěrák, 1991, 100 min., Czech with English subtitles)
