Film & Beer: Those Wonderful Years that Sucked

Date: 20 November 2018 7:00 PM, Venue: Bistro Bohem

Bistro Bohem will screen the smash hit "Those Wonderful Years that Sucked" (Bájecná léta pod psa) on November 20, 2018, at 7 pm. The dark comedy, adapted from a novel by Michal Viewegh, chronicles the life of a Czech family from the 1960s to just after the Velvet Revolution.

Milena (Libuše Šafránková) and Aleš (Ondřej Vetchý) are getting ready to welcome their first child, who's born unexpectedly during the play "Waiting for Godot." Aleš names him Kvido, as a standing ovation greets the newborn. However, the lives of Aleš and Milena change dramatically following the Soviet invasion of Prague in 1968. Aleš refuses to join the Communist Party which could cost him dearly and just might drive him to the brink of insanity.  Meanwhile, young Kvido adds a bit of comic relief through his writings, oration, and childhood crush. The film shows the difficulties of living under a totalitarian regime. It also reveals the everyday life of a child growing into adulthood before the revolution. Unwind at the Bistro with this classic 90s film.

Directed by Petr Nikolaev, 1997, 109 min., Czech with English subtitles
