Lecture: Contending with the Holocaust in Central Europe

Michael Kraus, Dirks Professor of Political Science at Middlebury College, will give the lecture "Contending with the Holocaust in Central Europe" at the Czech Embassy on January 29, 2019, at 6 pm. In his reflections on the subject, Dr. Kraus traces the journeys of his relatives, those who perished and those who were saved.

The event is presented to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day, designated by the UN for member states to honor the Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism.

Michael Kraus is Frederick C. Dirks Professor of Political Science at Middlebury College. A native of Prague, he earned his Ph.D. in Politics at Princeton. He is the recipient of major national fellowships from the National Council of Soviet and East European Research, Ford Foundation, the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX), Fulbright-Hays and the American Council of Learned Societies. His publications include Irreconcilable Differences? Explaining Czechoslovakia's Dissolution; Russia and Eastern Europe After Communism: The Search for New Political, Economic, and Security Systems. He has held research appointments at Harvard's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs and at the Kennedy School's Carr Center for Human Rights Policy, Columbia University's Harriman Institute, and Stanford University's Hoover Institution. In 2017-18, he was the Ben and Zelda Cohen Fellow at the Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Embassy Security Policy: For entrance, all guests will be subject to security screening. Photo ID is required and must match RSVP confirmation for each individual. No admittance will be permitted without proper registration. Bags and suitcase are not allowed. Only small purses are permitted but must be opened for inspection. Coat check is not available.               

Parking: Non-metered parking is available on Spring of Freedom Street and Tilden Street.            

Closest Metro: The Embassy is about a 15-20 minute walk from the Van Ness Metro Station.
