Lions of Czech Film: Home Care

Date: 10 August 2016 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM, Venue: Avalon Theatre

Variety Magazine calls director Slávek Horák's film "Home Care" (Domácí péče), "wryly humorous and bittersweet...an appealing humanist tale that puts a poignant spin on that perennial staple of the Czech cinema, the village dramedy." Enjoy this moving film at the Avalon Theatre as part of the Lions of Czech Film Series. The film represented the Czech Republic for contention in the Academy Awards 2016.

Home Care | Domácí péče
2015, 92 min., in Czech with English subtitles
Directed by: Slávek Horák

Dedicated home care nurse Vlasta (Alena Mihulová) attends her whimsical patients in her Southern Moravia country region. After Vlasta learns about her own serious illness and need for help, she has to reach outside of her comfort zone for it. Thanks to the daughter of one of her patients who introduces her to an esoteric mentor, Vlasta starts to discover the realm of alternative healing which leads to understanding herself, hopefully... All this is frowned upon by her husband Láda (Bolek Polívka), who doesn’t believe in “all this nonsense” one bit. Thus Vlasta has to fight both her illness and her husband’s “common sense.” Drama and comedy intertwine as Vlasta realizes—for the first time in her life—that she needs care too... Focusing strongly on authenticity of story and performances, Home Care blends contrasts of comic and tragic, of everyday struggles and universal visions, into an emotional journey of a middle-aged woman’s self-discovery.

Awards: The film was the Czech Republic’s selection for the Academy Awards. Lead actress Alena Mihulová received a Czech Lion for Best Actress (2016).
