Lions of Czech Film: The Hastrman

As part of the Lions of Czech Film Series, the Avalon Theatre will feature "The Hastrman" (Hastrman) on August 14, at 8 pm. The film follows a mysterious nobleman who returns to his deteriorating ancestral home in a small Bohemian village to revitalize his family’s property after years abroad at the beginning of the 19th century. However, he carries hidden secrets and an unexpected love just might change his life forever.
Despite looking like a human, he has an obsessive affinity for water. He turns out to be the Hastrman, a water spirit who needs water to sustain his life and gain superhuman strength. In this romantic fantasy, a new love brings Hastrman unexpected happiness and an agonizing dilemma: whether to remain a wild creature or cross the boundaries to get closer to becoming human.
The film is the directorial debut of Ondřej Havelka, a renowned Czech jazz singer and actor.
Karel Dobrý who plays the Hastrman received the 2019 Czech Lion for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance.

Lions of Czech Film Series
