Panel Discussion: Radio Free Europe at 70 - Its Importance Then and Now

The Embassy of the Czech Republic, in collaboration with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), presents the online discussion Radio Free Europe at 70: Its Importance Then and Now with former RFE/RL directors Jamie Fly and Tom Dine moderated by Tomáš Etzler on December 9, 2020, from 10-11 am EST.

For 70 years, Radio Free Europe has played a significant role in supporting democracy and freedom of expression. By providing access to information and responsible debate, it has furthered the cause of freedom and human rights. Today, RFE broadcasts to 23 countries in 27 languages. What is its importance and role in today’s world? How has its work changed throughout the decades? How has social media impacted RFE? Join us and discuss these and more topics in our online discussion held in celebration of Radio Free Europe’s 70th anniversary.

BIOGRAPHIES
Tom Dine is president of American Friends of the Czech Republic. He served as the former president of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in Prague, Czech Republic, from 1997-2005. Prior to this, he was the former assistant administrator at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) from 1993 to 1997 in Washington, DC. He is a 55-year seasoned veteran in American foreign policy and politics.          

Jamie Fly is a senior fellow and senior advisor to the president of the German Marshall Fund in Berlin, Germany, where he researches and speaks about transatlantic relations, U.S. foreign policy, great power competition with Russia and China, and democracy and human rights. He previously served as president and chief executive officer of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in Prague, Czech Republic from 2019-2020.

Tomáš Etzler is a television journalist, scriptwriter and dramaturg with over 20 years of professional experience. As a correspondent and producer for CNN and the Czech Television, he worked in over 60 countries on five continents. He covered wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as conflicts in Haiti and Lebanon. His work has been featured on ITN, Channel 4, BBC Radio and in the Czech press. He has received numerous international awards, including an Emmy Award in 2008.
