Theatre Reading: Adam The Creator

Date: 14 March 2019 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Venue: Czech Embassy

Theatre artists Pete Danelski and Megan Diehl will present a reading of Adam The Creator by Karel and Josef Čapek at the Embassy of the Czech Republic on March 14, 2019, at 6 pm.

First written in Czech in 1928, and translated into English only once in 1931, Adam The Creator has spent a century virtually forgotten in the United States. Embracing the Čapek brothers’ signature social commentary and dark humor, the adaptation renews this often forgotten parable with a uniquely contemporary American voice. The reading will be in English.

This reading will be DC’s first presentation of Adam The Creator.

The event is presented in collaboration with the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU).

About Adam The Creator:
Adam, out of frustration with the corrupt state of humanity, publicly negates all of existence and is then charged with the re-creation of the universe. He ventures to build a new, better world by attempting to create the ideal man, woman, and companion from the clay of creation and the breath of life. Grappling with the inherent struggles of implementing his ideals in reality, he creates his own Alter Ego, who in turn challenges Adam to create the ideal society, with catastrophic results. Through his attempt to create a better world from his own solitary existence, Adam ultimately glimpses the inherent value of life and the beauty of humanity despite its flaws.
