Personal Items of First Family Return Home

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in collaboration with the National Museum of the Czech Republic presented the event Beneš and Beyond, honoring the memory of late Czechoslovak President Edvard Beneš and First Lady Hana Benešová, on May 1, 2019.

Ambassador Hynek Kmoníček welcomed guests to the event with opening remarks by the Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic, Antonín Staněk and General Director of the National Museum Michal Lukeš.

During the event, the National Museum received significant historical items from relatives of the First Family, which were on display at the Embassy of the Czech Republic.

Items on display included dresses, a coat, and a silk robe of Hana Benešová, a tea set, gloves and a purse, hats of Edvard Beneš and his wife, and photographs.

Andrea Pohl, the great-grandniece of Edvard Beneš and Hana Benešová, handed over the items to the museum as well as a walking cane of the former Czechoslovak President and a small suitcase that held his personal grooming items.

In her statement to the crowd, she said, "Although my grandmother, mother, and I are parting with these sentimental items with a heavy heart, we are very happy that some of these belongings can now be transferred into the hands of the National Museum in Prague for safekeeping and public display for the next generations to enjoy and study."

The program was complemented by a presentation on the recently released book "Bohemia on Records: Early Czech Sound Recordings in the United States" by Filip Šír as well as a musical component of classical pieces from the 1920s and 30s by cellist Štěpán Filípek and pianist Katelyn Bouska.
