Photo & Video Competition: The Czech Embassy invites all to celebrate Czech athletes and sports diplomacy.

The Embassy of the Czech Republic seeks submissions from around the United States of photographs and/or videos celebrating Czech sports stars!

For example, photographs or videos could show a child or adult excited at a game, talking about their favorite sports star, showing a skill they admire from their favorite athlete, etc. For each submission, please include the name of the Czech athlete and write a one sentence description of why the athlete inspires you or your child(ren).

The Czech Embassy will collect the videos and photographs in honor of Věra Čáslavská, the most decorated Czech Olympic gymnast in history, and share the best ones with the public during its fall Mutual Inspirations Festival 2021 - Věra Čáslavská.

Mutual Inspirations Festival 2021 - Věra Čáslavská

The Mutual Inspirations Festival (MIF) is an annual initiative spearheaded by the Embassy of the Czech Republic, focusing on the mutual inspirations between Czech and American cultures and featuring each year in September through November an extraordinary Czech personality who has greatly influenced and inspired others through his or her work. In its twelfth year, the festival will highlight sports diplomacy and celebrate the Olympic champion Věra Čáslavská and those inspired by her and other great Czech athletes’ feats. More information will be made available at www.mutualinspirations.org.

Věra Čáslavská

Věra Čáslavská (1942 –2016) was an incredible athlete, winning a total of 34 medals, including 22 gold medals, at the Olympic Games and at the World and European championships in the 1950s and 60s. She was a strong advocate of democracy in former communist Czechoslovakia.  Despite her absolute dominance at the 1968 Olympic Games, she was penalized for her subtle act of defiance upon the podium against the Soviet invasion of her nation. With the fall of the totalitarian regime in 1989, she was able to reclaim her stardom status as well as become an advisor to late President Václav Havel.
